Degas & Royal Academy discoveries

Visited the Degas exhibition earlier today.  I have always enjoyed Degas from, I suppose, a superficial view - the ballet pictures especially.  The lovely positions, the light and especially the fabric and the prettiness. But this exhibition focusing on movement dug a lot deeper.  Lots and lots of drawings of dancers in different positions and sections on photography and its influence and his own photographic experiments.  Includes work by Marey and Muybridge.  Lovely to see the Little Dancer again as well and the preparatory drawings.  Will try and think about the drawings at life drawing on Monday. Remember to 'look' properly. The panoramic format he used makes the eye move along the picture adding to the sense of movement.  Love the image below which is a bit like my own x-ray imagery. Also remember some work I did many years ago using negative of a photograph of Chesil beach  - maybe revisit and see what that offers now....

                                                          DANCER (ARMS OUTSTRETCHED)
                                                                           1895 or 1896
                                                                 Gelatin dry-plate negative

Also looked in on the John Maine RA Artist's Laboratory exhibition After Cosmati about his work on the Westminster Abbey pavement.  Realised he is also the artist recently commissioned to make Sea Strata for Green Park Tube station which I love so that was a happy find.  Must go and see the Cosmati sometime.  Got home and watched an RA video of his work on Chiswell in Portland - loved it now want to go and see that as well especially as it ties in a bit with the Chesil beach negative.

Browsing on the RA sight discovered that sadly Adrien Berg died earlier this year, have liked his work for a long time and then made a new (for me) discovery Frank Bowling.  Do more research into this artist.......
